The French president, Emmanuel Macron, has taken to the airwaves to tackle the chaos that has gripped the streets of France. He offered concessions in a bid to quell the protests but also condemned violence. `We will respond to the economic and social urgency with strong measures, by cutting taxes more rapidly, by keeping our spending under control, but not with U-turns,` he said during the national address. Over the last few weeks, anti-government protesters have fought police, throwing missiles, torching cars and looting shops.
